Landscaping

We offer  Landscape Design and Installation, either Residential or Commercial; including new plantings, and renovations of old landscapes.  We install trees, shrubs, seasonal plantings of annuals and perennials from a small backyard to a large commercial planting.  See the difference proper landscaping can make.

Landscape Design

Proper placement of trees and shrubs is our first step.  Plants are spaced to allow for future growth without overcrowding.  Many factors are also considered such as leaf and flower color, fragrance, berries, texture and more.  Good landscape design provides the framework to build on with seasonal color from perennials, annuals and bulbs.  Whether commercial or residential, the design must consider which views are most important to the owner, (inside looking out, or outside the property looking in) which seasons are most important to the owner, and many other factors such as favorite plants and favorite colors.    Please see the examples below or click here for additional examples.

Landscape Renovation Front Yard Planting - Springfield, Delaware County, PA 19064

A large tree had fallen into the front yard and damaged the existing front walk and planting which was already in need of a face lift.  It is a shady site; the ground cover was in decent shape and there were some nice ferns in the existing beds.  We removed the existing overgrown shrubs, cleaned up added to the ground cover and  top-dressed and seeded the lawn.  The new cherry laurel will give privacy to the front porch in a couple of years.  The brick walk was replaced with a flagstone walk using the old brick as a border.  The vent pipe was hidden with a boulder and some perennial liriope, and Caladiums were planted for dependable annual color in the shade.

Front Yard Entrance Planting - Drexel Hill, Delaware County, PA 19026

The old planting in front of the house was overgrown and needed a renovation.  The new planting is a mixture of shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and annuals; it is primarily meant to be viewed from the street looking at the house.  The mahonia shrubs will give additional privacy to the front porch in a couple of years without the closed in feel of the old yews.  The planting has a natural feel - the plants were spaced so they would not have to be pruned as heavily as the old planting - and there is a lot of color most of the year

Front Yard Entrance Planting - Springfield, Delaware County, PA 19064

This front yard planting was mostly just lawn with a narrow bed across the front of the house and a dogwood tree with a pachysandra ground cover.  The entire area inside the curved walk was cleared and made into a planting bed with shrubs, perennials, grasses, annuals, and river boulders for interest.  A small was created by the entrance to the walk and the bed was carried across to the other side of the walk and around the house for more interest.

Back Yard Walk with Landscaping - Lower Merion, Montgomery County, PA 19096

The back entrance to this house did not need a solid walk past the first set of steps.  This was the main entrance into the house from the driveway so the customer wanted to add some interest.  The walk leading around to the deck steps was made more informal with two 1-ft. bands of flagstone and 1-ft. of river rocks in the center.  Stepping stones were placed through pea gravel beds surrounded with boulders and river rocks to give an effect similar to stepping stoned through a pond.  The design was influenced by Japanese Gardens.  Also shown is the same garden about 10 years after planting showing how properly spaced plants will fill in and the landscape will improve over the years.  Overcrowded plantings are more expensive to install, and can look better when first planted, but they usually start looking worse after a few years.  Additional photos of the project can be seen on our Landscape Design Page

Back Yard Patio and Landscaping - Merion Station, Montgomery County, Main Line, PA 19066

This property had a few old plantings against the house, but had recently moved their driveway to the other side, leaving an empty yard on this side of the house.  A Bluestone patio and sitting wall was constructed with new beds and renovation of the plantings against the house

Commercial Office Building Side - Philadelphia, PA 19104

The planting here is meant to be viewed from inside.  Located on Market St. near 39th St., arborvitae were planted to screen the adjacent parking lot (now another building) and street.  The stone beds cover drains installed by the builder.  They help keep drains clean of soil and mulch and mimic small ponds.  Plants were planted away from the windows to give an unobstructed view.  Most of the color here is from shrubs, perennials and bulbs, but some annuals are planted for additional summer color.  Click here for additional examples of seasonal color plantings

Residential Back Yard Planting - Villanova, Montgomery County, PA 19085

This planting is meant to be viewed from the house.  Many shrubs were planted haphazardly around the back yard and there was no open space.  Shrubs were moved to a bed created along the border of the property.  This opened up the view from the house and organized the plants to help screen the neighboring property.  A small lawn was carved out in the center of the yard to make some usable space and help to set off  the beds.  Rocks dug up planting shrubs were used to separate the bed from the lawn.  Perennials and bulbs were planted in open spaces in the beds for seasonal color.

Seasonal Color Plantings

With a good structure of trees and shrubs in place, the final step is the addition of color with perennials, bulbs and annuals.  These finishing touches are often the most noticed part of a landscape.  Color schemes can change with the season and can be changed year to year if desired.  Plants in a given location are chosen by preferences for sun or shade and other factors, but sometimes experimentation can yield surprising results.  Pansies, Tulips and other bulbs in spring;   Impatients, Caladiums, Geraniums, Marigolds and other annuals in summer;  Mums in fall, along with pansies and colorful kale and cabbages right through the winter.   Add to this, dependable long lasting perennials for a property you and your neighbors can enjoy year round.  For a look at individual seasonal plants see the seasonal plants page.

Shown here is the same small area with different plantings.  Spring 1 is two colors of pansies (also a good choice for fall planting).  Spring 2 is Apricot tulips under planted with purple pansies.  Summer is a planting of weeping geraniums.  Fall is a planting of white chrysanthemums mixed with some red begonias that still look good from a summer planting.  Click here for additional examples of seasonal color plantings
