Landscape Design

We offer  Landscape Design and Installation, either Residential or Commercial; including new plantings, or renovations of old landscapes.  We install trees, shrubs, seasonal plantings of annuals and perennials from a small backyard to a large commercial planting.  Proper placement of trees and shrubs is our first step.  Plants are spaced to allow for future growth without overcrowding.  Many factors are also considered such as leaf and flower color, fragrance, berries, texture and more.  Good landscape design provides the framework to build on with seasonal color from perennials, annuals and bulbs.  Whether commercial or residential, the design must consider which views are most important to the owner, (inside looking out, or outside the property looking in) which seasons are most important to the owner, and many other factors such as favorite plants and favorite colors.
Plantings shown were designed constructed by Robert J. Kleinberg Landscape Design and Construction.  He is an ICPI Certified Concrete Paver Installer and a NCMA Certified Segmental Retaining Wall Installer.  He is also an EP Henry Authorized Hardscaping Contractor, and has been designing and constructing patios and gardens in Philadelphia, Montgomery County ( Lower Merion, Bala Cynwyd, Ardmore, Narberth ), Delaware County ( Havertown, Marple, Drexel Hill, Lansdowne, Springfield, Swarthmore, Ridley, Media, Upper Darby, Newtown Square, Radnor ), and the Main Line ( Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Gladyne, Wynnewood ) PA as a Landscape and Hardscaping contractor since 1986.

Please see the examples below and see the difference proper landscaping can make.

Commercial Landscape Design

The designs on this site are separated into Commercial and Residential categories to help organize these pages, but the same design principles apply to each category.  Ideas from one area usually can be applied to the other.  Most of the commercial work on these pages was performed at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia from the 1986 to 1996.  For more information about our work at Presbyterian Hospital please see our about us page.

Office Building Side 2

This planting is the same on shown on the main landscaping page.  The view here is from the Filbert St. side.  The overhead view shows the parking lot and other areas outside the planting that are screened out by the arborvitae.  The planting here is meant to be viewed from inside.  Located on Market St. near 39th St., arborvitae were planted to screen the adjacent parking lot (now another building) and street.  The stone beds cover drains installed by the builder.  They help keep drains clean of soil and mulch and mimic small ponds.  Plants were planted away from the windows to give an unobstructed view.  Most of the color here is from shrubs, perennials and bulbs, but some annuals are planted for additional summer color.  Click here for additional examples of seasonal color plantings.

Residential Landscape Design

The designs on this site are separated into Commercial and Residential categories to help organize these pages, but the same design principles apply to each category.  Ideas from one area usually can be applied to the other.  If you are interested in residential landscape design and construction it may also be helpful to check out the commercial pages for ideas.

Back Yard Planting 2

This house was constructed in a new development.  The front was landscaped by the builder, but the back yard had nothing planted.  The plantings here were designed to soften the appearance of the house.  Taller narrow plants were planted at the corners to soften the lines.  Low growing plants were used under windows and medium sized plants used against bare walls.

Back Yard Walk with Landscaping

The back entrance to this house did not need a solid walk past the first set of steps.  This was the main entrance into the house from the driveway so the customer wanted to add some interest.  The walk leading around to the deck steps was made more informal with two 1-ft. bands of flagstone and 1-ft. of river rocks in the center.  Stepping stones were placed through pea gravel beds surrounded with boulders and river rocks to give an effect similar to stepping stoned through a pond.  The design was influenced by Japanese Gardens.  Also shown is the same garden about 10 years after planting showing how properly spaced plants will fill in and the landscape will improve over the years.  Overcrowded plantings are more expensive to install, and can look better when first planted, but they usually start looking worse after a few years
